Most countries use a progressive tax system — different portions of income are taxed at different rates. You do not pay your highest rate on your entire income, only on the portion that falls within that bracket. This calculator lets you build any country's bracket structure and instantly see exactly how much tax falls in each slab.
For example, under the UK 2024-25 system: the personal allowance of £12,570 is tax-free, income from £12,571–£50,270 is taxed at 20%, and above £50,270 at 40%. On a £60,000 salary, total tax is approximately £11,432 — an effective rate of 19%, not 40%, because most income falls in lower brackets.
Frequently Asked Questions
What US federal tax brackets should I enter?
2024 single filer: 10% up to $11,600; 12% up to $47,150; 22% up to $100,525; 24% up to $191,950; 32% up to $243,725; 35% up to $609,350; 37% above. Standard deduction: $14,600. Note: state income tax is separate.
What are the UK 2024-25 income tax brackets?
Personal allowance £12,570 at 0%. Basic rate 20% on £12,571–£50,270. Higher rate 40% on £50,271–£125,140. Additional rate 45% above £125,140. Enter standard deduction as £12,570.
Why is my effective rate lower than my bracket?
Because progressive taxation only applies the higher rate to income above that bracket's threshold. If you are in the 40% bracket, only income above that threshold is taxed at 40%. All income below is taxed at lower rates.
Does this include state or local taxes?
No — run it once for federal taxes and once for your state's brackets, then add the results. For most countries one set of brackets covers all income tax.
