Electricity bills in India follow slab-rate pricing: the first 100 units (kWh) per month cost less per unit than the next 200, and so on. The rate per unit jumps at each threshold. This means two months with the same number of units can cost the same, but one month with double the units costs significantly more than double the amount - because the extra units fall into more expensive slabs.
The calculator lets you enter either a flat per-unit rate or slab-wise rates. Add fixed charges (the base charge you pay even if you use zero units) and electricity duty (a state tax, typically 5-20% on top of energy charges) for a complete estimate. Actual bills also include other small charges like meter rent and green energy cess that vary by state and DISCOM.

What is a unit (kWh) of electricity?
1 unit = 1 kilowatt-hour = using 1,000 watts for one hour. A 1kW air conditioner running for 1 hour uses 1 unit. A 100-watt bulb running for 10 hours uses 1 unit. A typical Indian household uses 100-300 units per month without AC; 300-600 with AC in summer.
Why is my bill higher than expected even though my units seem the same?
Check for fixed charges and taxes, which do not change with usage. Also check if your DISCOM revised rates - tariff revisions happen periodically. Slab system means even slightly higher usage can push many units into a pricier tier.
How can I reduce my electricity bill?
Switch to BEE 5-star rated appliances (especially ACs and refrigerators). Use LED lighting. Set AC to 24-26C (each degree below 24C increases consumption by 6%). Run washing machines and dishwashers on off-peak schedules. Unplug devices not in use to eliminate standby power consumption.
