A percentage is a way of expressing a number as a fraction of 100. It is used everywhere, from exam scores and discounts to tax rates and investment returns. Our percentage calculator handles three of the most common calculations: finding a percentage of a number (e.g. 20% of 500), finding what percentage one number is of another (e.g. 75 out of 300), and calculating percentage change between two values.

Percentage change is especially important in finance and academics. The formula is: ((New Value − Old Value) / Old Value) × 100. A positive result is an increase; a negative result is a decrease. For example, if a stock goes from ₹200 to ₹250, the percentage increase is 25%.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate percentage of a number?

Multiply the number by the percentage and divide by 100. For example, 15% of 800 = (15 × 800) / 100 = 120.

How do I find what percentage X is of Y?

Divide X by Y and multiply by 100. For example, 45 out of 180 = (45 / 180) × 100 = 25%.

What is the formula for percentage increase?

Percentage increase = ((New Value − Old Value) / Old Value) × 100. If a price rises from ₹400 to ₹500, the increase is (100 / 400) × 100 = 25%.

What is the difference between percentage and percentile?

Percentage is a score out of 100. Percentile tells you what proportion of people scored below you. A 90 percentile means you scored better than 90% of test-takers, regardless of your actual percentage marks.
