Dividend Calculator

Hold dividend-paying stocks and want to know your annual income from them? Enter your shares, dividend per share, and payout frequency to see your total dividend income and yield.

How to use

  1. Enter how many shares you hold and the dividend per share.
  2. Pick how often dividends are paid - quarterly, half-yearly, or annually.
  3. Add the current stock price if you want to see the dividend yield percentage.
  4. Hit Calculate to see your total dividend income.

Dividend income is straightforward: shares owned multiplied by dividend per share. If a company declares a Rs.5 dividend and you hold 1,000 shares, that is Rs.5,000 before tax. Comparing dividends across stocks is where dividend yield comes in - it expresses the annual dividend as a percentage of the current stock price.

A stock at Rs.200 paying Rs.10 annual dividend has a 5% yield. A high yield can sometimes signal a falling stock price rather than a generous payout. Always check the payout ratio (dividends paid vs earnings) - a payout ratio above 80-90% may not hold long-term.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is dividend yield calculated?

Dividend yield = (annual dividend per share / current stock price) x 100. A stock paying Rs.12 per year trading at Rs.300 has a 4% yield.

Is dividend income taxable in India?

Yes. Since 2020, dividends are taxable in your hands at your applicable slab rate. TDS of 10% is deducted if annual dividend exceeds Rs.5,000. Add it to your income when filing ITR.

What is a special dividend vs regular dividend?

A regular dividend is paid quarterly or annually as part of the company's standard practice. A special dividend is a one-time payout from an asset sale or windfall. Never extrapolate a special dividend into your yield calculation.
