Exam Score Needed Calculator

Tells you the exact exam score you need to hit your target grade. Enter what you've scored so far, how much the exam is worth, and your target - it does the math. If the required score is above 100%, you'll know to adjust expectations early.

How to use

  1. Enter your current score and the maximum marks for that work.
  2. Set the weighting: what percentage counts toward the current work and what percentage the exam is worth.
  3. Enter your target overall grade and it shows you exactly what you need to score in the exam.

You know your current grades and you know the final exam is worth a specific percentage. What score do you need on the final to end up with the grade you want? This calculator works backwards from your target to tell you the exact score required.

It also shows whether the target is achievable. If you need a 112% on the final to get an A, that is not happening. But if you need a 65% to pass, knowing that might let you relax your final prep and redirect energy elsewhere. Realistic planning beats anxious over-studying.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the required exam score calculated?

Required score = (target grade - current weighted average x current weight fraction) / exam weight fraction. For example: target 70%, current score 65% on 70% of the grade, final worth 30%. Required = (70 - 65*0.70) / 0.30 = (70 - 45.5) / 0.30 = 24.5 / 0.30 = 81.7%.

What if the required score is above 100%?

Your target grade is no longer achievable given the current scores and remaining exam weight. The calculator will show this. You may need to revise your target grade down to something still achievable.

Can I use this for multiple remaining exams?

This calculator handles one upcoming exam. For multiple remaining assessments, calculate the combined weight and target the group as a whole, or use a weighted average calculator to figure out what average score across multiple remaining assessments you need.
