Buying exactly the right number of tiles is trickier than it looks. Too few and you face a second trip to the store hoping the same batch is still in stock. Too many and you waste money. The calculation needs to account for tile size, room area, and a waste factor for cuts, breakage, and future repairs.
Standard waste allowance is 10% for a rectangular room with simple layout. For diagonal tile installation, complex patterns, or rooms with lots of obstacles (columns, fixtures), allow 15-20%. The calculator gives you the number of tiles based on area and adds your specified waste percentage to give the final order quantity.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much waste percentage should I add?
10% for straightforward rectangular rooms. 15% for rooms with diagonal patterns or many cuts around fixtures. 20% for herringbone or intricate patterns. Always round up to the nearest box quantity since tiles are sold in fixed box amounts.
Do I calculate area including or excluding fixtures?
Calculate the gross room area, then subtract large fixed areas like a bath or shower tray where tiles will not go. Do not subtract smaller obstacles like toilets - you still need cut tiles around them, and the small savings from measuring around them is not worth the measuring effort.
What if tiles come in boxes, not individually?
Divide the total tile count by tiles-per-box and round up to the nearest whole box. Always buy in whole boxes since partial boxes often cannot be returned, and tile batches (shades) can vary slightly between production runs.
